Startup Weekend NB Takes Collaborative Approach to Solving Civic Challenges

FREDERICTON, N.B.- With a vision to position themselves as a ‘Digital City,’ Fredericton has partnered with Startup Weekend NB, a 3-day event that provides aspiring entrepreneurs with an opportunity to take an idea from concept to creation in the span of a weekend, to engage local innovators in providing innovative solutions to civic challenges.

The City of Fredericton will be sharing their civic challenges with participants as a means of fostering ideas that have impact right in our own city.  The City will also be providing experts to discuss the challenges in detail and to work directly with the entrepreneurs from idea to concept.

“We're working with startups almost every single day. They're bringing innovative solutions to the City and making it a better place to live, work and play, and we're working with them to develop and test their ideas so they can launch successful businesses. It's bigger than just win-win, it's helping us all achieve a better community,” says Adam Bell, Assistant Director - Finance, Innovation and Technology for the City of Fredericton.

Startup Fredericton, a group of support organizations put in place to promote and encourage entrepreneurialism in the region, recognized that a partnership between its municipality and an event focused on attracting innovators to solve social challenges was a great opportunity for collaboration.

“To have the city collaborate with Startup Weekend NB and actively participate in the event shows its commitment to being a leading municipality when it comes to digital innovation,” says Norm Couturier, Startup Fredericton Chairperson.

The upcoming Startup Weekend will be hosted at the Ville Cooperative in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Feb. 23-25, and will be focused on products and solutions that have social impact. Whether you’re a student, professional, experienced entrepreneur, existing business owner, or an engaged citizen, this event is an opportunity for you to experience the “startup” process and to create impactful solutions to real social challenges.
