Regional Partners Join Forces for Educational Tour and Trade Mission to Boston
FREDERICTON, NB - Ignite Fredericton, the Pond-Deshpande Centre (PDC), and Opportunities NB (ONB) joined forces to co-ordinate a successful three-day experiential learning opportunity for businesses and individuals from Atlantic Canada interested in exploring, making new connections, and conducting business in the New England marketplace.
His Worship Mayor Mike O’Brien led the charge as 56 Atlantic Canadians descended on the City of Boston to explore the entrepreneurial landscape and further strengthen Fredericton’s business and cultural ties while creating new export opportunities for regional businesses and post-secondary institutions. "It's important that we continue to make connections and build strong partnerships to create opportunities for economic development and job creation” said Mayor O’Brien.
The Atlantic delegation had the opportunity to meet with a variety of New England business leaders such as the Consul General of Canada and former premier of New Brunswick, David Alward. The group also participated in programming with Canadian Entrepreneurs in New England (CENE), the New England- Canada Business Council (NECBC) and sector Trade Commissioners. Additionally, the delegation was invited to visit the Institute for Human Centered Design to learn about the role of design in expanding opportunities and enhancing experiences.
ONB, which has formed a strategic partnership with CENE to help New Brunswick entrepreneurs grow their businesses, helped bring New Brunswick companies in the IT, food and beverage, and consumer goods sectors to Boston to help them make connections in the region for which most of the province’s exports are destined.
“Roughly 70 per cent of New Brunswick’s exports to the U.S. go to New England, and jobs on both sides of the border depend on those strong ties,” said Stephen Lund, CEO of ONB. “New Brunswick’s innovative companies have much to offer the global marketplace. This mission was a part of our strategy to prepare and train potential exporters on how to enter and navigate new markets.”
During the mission, participants attended both the MassChallenge and the EforAll summit on "Inclusive Entrepreneurship". These events are staples within the entrepreneurial community and provided a platform with which to share best practices, programs and opportunities across the border.
"The Pond-Deshpande Centre was thrilled to have his worship, Mayor Mike O'Brien, and the Atlantic Canadian team join our Student Ambassadors for our annual Boston entrepreneurial ecosystem tour. This event provides our young change makers with early inspiration and connections into the New England region, strengthening their entrepreneurial endeavours" said Karina LeBlanc, Executive Director.
