Mayor O’Brien leads successful economic development mission to Boston with regional partners
FREDERICTON, NB - Mayor Mike O'Brien was in Boston last week to attract investment to Fredericton, support local exporters and build strategic partnerships. The Mayor's mission program was initiated and organized by Ignite Fredericton, the economic development catalyst agency for the Greater Fredericton Region.
During the mission, the Mayor's delegation met with Boston-based businesses in the information & communications technology, advanced-manufacturing and biotechnology sectors to pitch the advantages of expanding into Fredericton.
The Mayor also met with key partners in the region, including Consul General David Alward, Canada's Trade Commissioner Service, the Office of Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and local acceleration/incubation centres. The Mayor concluded his mission with a keynote panel at the EforAll Summit in Waltham, MA. He was joined by Gerry Pond, a leader in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector and Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, venture capitalist and world-renowned entrepreneur. The panel focused on Deconstructing Fredericton’s Economic Ecosystem with Mayor O’Brien highlighting the importance of collaboration amongst government, academia and economic development stakeholders for a successful ecosystem, exemplified by Startup Fredericton, the city’s business support network.
Twelve New Brunswick-based companies (8 from Fredericton) were also in Boston for a trade mission program organized by Ignite Fredericton, Opportunities NB and the Pond Deshpande Centre. These new exporters were provided with on-the-ground programming to accelerate their international sales from the Consulate General of Canada in Boston, the New England-Canada Business Council, the Canadian Entrepreneurs in New England network, and at the EforAll Summit.
"Historically, the New England region has been our traditional trading partners" said Mayor Mike O'Brien, "it's important that we continue to make connections and build strong partnerships to create opportunities for economic development and job creation".
"Boston and the greater New England region is a strategic geographic target for Fredericton exporters and for investment attraction" said Ignite Fredericton CEO Larry Shaw, "we were pleased to have Mayor O'Brien personally champion the work Ignite Fredericton has done to develop economic opportunities in the region."
Following the mission, Ignite Fredericton will work to capitalize on investment attraction opportunities developed, and support local exporters through their service pillars with the goal of local job creation.
